BAE SYSTEMS Wins Three Airport Consultancy Contracts

Ref: 161/2000

BAE Systems’ Infrastructure Solutions, the specialist aviation and construction consultancy, has just completed one of three contracts awarded by international banks for airport development projects.

An upgrade programme completed in October enables the largest existing airliners to use Samoa International Airport and will allow projected future tourism developments. Funded by the World Bank, the US $20m project consists of major terminal building refurbishment, a new air traffic control tower and a fire and rescue station. Airside, there is a 300m runway extension & overlay, and a doubling in size of the aircraft parking areas with major improvements to the airfield ground lighting systems. Infrastructure Solutions provided specialist construction management.

A commission to help develop the economic viability of Uzbekistan’s Tashkent International Airport was awarded in August by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD). Over the next four months, specialists will continue to analyse existing financial projections; develop new air traffic forecasts and a 12-year financial projection; and define Tashkent International Airport's passenger tariff structure. They will advise the airport operators, the airlines, the airport concession companies and the EBRD. The study will help develop Tashkent into the gateway airport for Uzbekistan and will provide a framework for profitable operation of eastern European airports.

A study to help develop the new cargo terminal at Armenia’s Yerevan International Airport was awarded by the European Bank of Reconstruction & Development in June. Infrastructure Solutions is to establish a framework to privatise the cargo terminal. This will consist of reviewing the existing facilities, analysing the potential market and advising on the development of a procurement programme. An initial study recommending the development of an innovative public-private solution was presented to the EBRD in July.
