The Aerostructures business employs around 830 people across two sites in: -
- Prestwick in Ayrshire, Scotland, U.K.
- Samlesbury in Lancashire, England, U.K.
A unique operating model allows Aerostructures to participate as an intelligent integrator; offering a key design and build capability for large major airframe structures, in addition to a traditional build to print capability. It offers the design and integration of airframe structure solutions to the world's leading commercial aircraft manufacturers, capitalising on Engineering, Supply Chain and Project Management expertise. With facilities in the UK and North America, and an extended global enterprise reaching into Europe, South Africa and the Far East as well, the business has facilities that are well invested and capabilities and experience unlikely to be found outside a few well-established airframe manufacturers.
Our Vision:
To be the premier aerostructures provider
Global Operations
The Aerostructures business has focused on value-added structural assembly and integration which has transformed the business from a vertically integrated manufacturing operation into a focused global operation.
Through a network of strategic suppliers operating within a partnership agreement framework, and supported by in-country Supplier Operations Managers, the Aerostructures business identifies develops and manages a global supply chain. Specific focus has been placed on the application of lean enterprise practices to eliminate waste, maximise value, reduce cost and facilitate fulfilment of offset and market access requirements. A Lean philosophy is supported through formal, collaborative partnerships for Resources, Technology and Differentiating processes. This ensures the most competitive solutions are always offered to the market.
Engineering Application
Our Engineering approach is fully integrated into the key business capabilities of Aerostructures. A small engineering team with highly focused capability is grouped into:
- skills and competencies in value engineering and cost reduction
- technical leadership in design and integration
The capability is focused on primary metallic and secondary composite structures.
The engineering application also fulfils the role of Delegated Design Authority for both Airbus and Boeing and involves the active management of outsourced engineering resources. Customers are offered a total integrated solution, covering: -
- Technical Integration
- Engineering service for business solutions including:
- Product performance
- Supply chain
- Assembly
- Logistics
- Final integration and
- Life cycle support
Project Management
The management of complex aircraft programmes, combined with the use of a sophisticated global operation to provide advantageous customer pricing and market access opportunities, demands a high level of project management skill. Dedicated project management capability has been embedded within each of the operational business streams and provides a key interface between the customer and the business operation.
Strategic Customer Relationships
Aerostructures has developed strong customer relationships and enjoys within the its' portfolio the major aircraft manufacturers :
Airbus
Aerostructures is the largest airframe supplier into Airbus and acknowledged as a key supplier of major wing structures with "life of programme" contracts, delivering across the whole range of Airbus products, including the new A380 aircraft.
Boeing
Aerostructures is the second largest airframe supplier in Europe for Major Outside Production and participates in the Boeing European Supplier Council. Aerostructures also participated as a key player in the Joint Concept Development stage on the Dreamliner 787 program, contributing to a number of advanced technology areas and structural design configuration studies.
Raytheon
A diverse skill base with many years of experience and knowledge enables Aerostructures to supply large major non-wing structures on older designed aircraft such as the Hawker 800XP.
