Naval Ships - Type 45 Destroyer
Type 45

Building a Versatile Warship
The Type 45's primary role is anti air warfare. Ships and carriers, and the auxiliaries and merchant ships that support them, need protection against air, surface and subsurface threats, and the combat system to be deployed in the Type 45 is designed to counter the full range of anti-ship missiles and aircraft. However, as with all destroyers and frigates, Type 45 will be a multi-role, general-purpose platform capable of a spectrum of tasks from peace support and defence diplomacy through to high-intensity warfare.

Platform

Platform For The Future
At approximately 7,350 tonnes and 152.4m in length, the Type 45 is considerably larger than the Type 42 it replaces. This reflects the need for greater versatility to meet the wider range of roles the new ships will be called on to perform. Designed for missions of up to 45 days, the Type 45 will be able to transit 7,000 nautical miles at a speed of 18 knots, and reach a maximum speed of 27 knots +. In addition, the ships are designed for survivability with revolutionary signature reduction factors for stealth.

Multiple Target Capability
Type 45 will be able to engage a large number of targets simultaneously, and defend aircraft carriers or groups of ships, such as an amphibious landing force, against the strongest future threats from the air.

Economical To Operate And Maintain
Type 45 has been designed from the outset to be as economical as possible to run and maintain. Electric propulsion is a major contributing factor, while larger space makes it easier - and thus faster and cheaper - to overhaul or replace equipments and systems. For the first time, every system acquired for the ship is being selected on a through-life cost basis.

Room For Growth
Type 45 will be designed with growth in mind, specifically to allow for the incremental acquisition of equipment fits to meet the changing demands of defence operations over the life of the class without major rework on the ship structure, and without reducing the quality of life for the crew. The design also allows sufficient margins to accommodate alternative weapons systems.
